Judge's Comments

Dear Members, Officers and Board of Directors,

Thank you so much for the opportunity to judge your first “A” Match on January 31, 2009.  Your hospitality is second to none! And you made Andy and I both feel very welcome indeed.  The food was delicious [and healthy] and the raffle was great fun.  We are already enjoying our winnings.  You ran your match superbly, and you are to be congratulated on a successful step toward your AKC Licensing as a ‘point club.’

As many of you knew, I have been absent from the Siberian ring since 2003.  Today made me sorry I have been gone so long.  It was a true pleasure to judge your dogs.  I will keep my ‘observations’ to a minimum.  But here they are:

  • I was pleased with the overall ‘correctness’ and ‘moderation’ of the dogs.  There were no real extremes or exaggerations in any aspect.

  • Breed ‘type’ was above average to excellent throughout.  Some of the ‘flaws’ and outright ‘faults’ that used to be apparent in the breed in the ‘old days’ were not evident today.

  • Heads were pleasing and of correct proportions.

  • Ears were neither too tall nor too short.  With the possible exception of 1 dog whose ears were a little wide for me, they were well placed on the head.

  • Tail sets were good.

  • Coats were correct.

  • You are to be congratulated on the soundness of your dogs.

  • Side-go was good.

  • Temperaments were excellent.

Things that surprised me were:

  • Front construction.  Overall the angulation of upper arms felt dangerously like they were approaching the perpendicular cautioned against in the Standard.  Shoulder blades were of good length and layback.  With the exception of only 1 dog, the depth of briskets was above the elbow, and ribs were correctly sprung.

  • Rear movement going away.  Perhaps the dogs as a whole did not like the footing provided by the mats.  Siberians are sensitive to surfaces as we know! More than 1 moved parallel in the rear.

My ‘final four’ Siberians in review:

  • A young male full of promise.  Memorable to me for his reach of neck, front construction, overall balance, pleasing head, and movement. One to watch.

  • A confident, clean-moving, classic handsome male of absolute correct proportions and excellent conditioning, beautifully presented, who commanded the ring with his presence.  My eventual Best of Opposite Sex.

  • A young female who so exuded breed type that she overcame mediocre presentation.  Showed she could move cleanly and correctly, and she can challenge for top honors.

  • A smaller female whose performance in the ring today was flawless, a joy to witness.  She filled my eye, and so clearly demonstrated the hallmark movement and correct type of this breed that she could not be denied the Best of Breed award.
